14 Valentine's Day Ideas That Aren't Totally Cheesy, including 10 Valendtine's Day date ideas with or without kids and 4 Valentine's Day gifts for him and her, featured on the Southern Momdays blogFinding Valentine’s Day ideas that aren’t cheesy is no easy feat, y’all.

In the land of cheesy holidays, it’s the capital. Andy and I have never been big “Vdayers” ourselves. Ever since the Great Gift Fiasco of 2007, when he bought me a black coffee maker – with a black bow on top – for Valentine’s Day (don’t be jelly), I nixed the holiday from our have-to-celebrate list. Now with a baby, it’s doubly hard to celebrate! But, I digress.

Valentine’s Day is really a great excuse to force yourself to date your spouse, if nothing else. So we have to redeem Valentine’s Day for the great date opportunity that it is – not just the loathed, red holiday with a flying nakey baby as a mascot. We gotta help Valentine’s Day, poor ol’ Valentine’s Day.

Whether you’re searching for unique (read: inventive!) Valentine’s Day date ideas at home with kids, or you’re searching for romantic Valentine’s Day date ideas without kids, this list has you covered.

The hubs and I will likely choose from the with kids set ourselves since we’re homebodies and totally cool like that. But, if you’ve got family nearby who’ll take your wee ones off your hands for a night (or two!), or you’ve got a great babysitter on speed dial who’s not already booked up, then definitely go for the second set!

And, if you’re a gift-giving couple, I’ve got a few great Valentine’s Day gift ideas for him and her at the end, too.

Valentine’s Day Date Ideas At Home – With Kids

No babysitter? No problem! Put the kids down for an early bedtime, grab the baby monitor, and get ready for a fun date night in.

  1. Pic-and-Meet: Order delivery, get out a box of pictures, and laugh about the first time you met.
  1. Drive-way Movie: Use the DVD player in your vehicle or tote your laptop out to the car, lean back the seats, and watch something NOT cartoon-themed. Eat nothing but junk food. (Extra points if you pull back the sun roof cover to see the stars!)
  1. Family Picnic: Grab some large blankets, whip up a few quick sandwiches, and head outside for dinner. Too cold, rainy, or snowy? Clear the living room floor, toss down the blankets, and host your picnic indoors. Only finger foods allowed!
  1. Old Timey Date: Cut off all the lights and anything that runs on electricity. Leave the phones in another room. Talk and eat snacks by candlelight.
  1. Bedroom Bliss: Cheesy name alert! (Sorry, couldn’t think of another – and hey, this post is about Valentine’s Day.) Give your bedroom a good clean, change out the sheets, and light some candles to transform your space into a fresh, romantic sanctuary.

Valentine’s Day Date Ideas – Without Kids

You got a babysitter – fantastic! Now enjoy your time together via a unique date idea you won’t soon forget.

  1. Trip-and-Meet: Go on a little trip to recreate how you met…especially if it’s awkward.
  1. Drive-in Movie: Go to a drive-in movie. Eat nothing but junk food.
  1. Bonfire + Chocolate: Set up a small bonfire. Only eat things you can cook over that fire – like hotdogs or s’mores. Or, no cooking required…just eat chocolate. It is Valentine’s Day, after all.
  1. Camp It Out: Reserve a camping spot nearby, and go camping in a tent. Snuggle in close to stay warm!
  1. Swanky Escape: Get a room at a swanky hotel for one night. Upgrade to have rose petals and chocolate-covered strawberries if available. And plan to stay in!
